- ABOUT US -
My great-great-grandfather's legacy.
In 1877, Wong Ah Tat, a Chinese immigrant, set up a market garden on the banks of the Goulburn River, selling vegetable produce to miners heading to and from the Bendigo goldfields. He knew that access to nutritious fresh food was scarce, but the flood plains of the river offered rich fertile soil in which to grow fruit and vegetables. For many years he worked the land to provide travellers and local residents with delights from his garden. Chinaman's Garden Reserve in the town of Mooroopna, Victoria, is the site of this former vegetable garden and is preserved in memory of Wong Ah Tat (1840-1930) and his wife, Mary Yates, a young lady from Wales.
Fast forward four generations and although I bear little resemblance to Wong Ah Tat, I am proud to follow in my great-great-grandfather's footsteps, offering local residents and passerby's the freshest selection of fruit, vegetables and fine food in the Macedon Ranges. Wherever possible, we source directly from the farm gate, and at the very least only sell Australian grown produce, focussing on seasonal varieties to offer the best value for money. Our little store in Romsey may not be shiny and new, but it has a rustic character that reflects the heart and soul of the local farmers and producers we support and whose goods we stock.
We believe the weekly grocery shop shouldn't be a chore - so we also provide home delivery when life is just too busy. Browse our website for current specials and delivery options. Otherwise we hope to see you in our store soon, enjoying the colour and scents of The Pantry on Main.
